“REAL Success successfully found us several capable and skilled candidates to interview for the role. Throughout the process, we were kept informed and updated regularly. I found Steph to be knowledgeable and easy to communicate with. Having the VITA profiles helped us determine what character traits would best support the farm’s development and success. This was a new process to us, to which we will continue to utilise in our recruitment processes. We are very happy with the candidate placed and look forward to working with REAL Success Ltd further in the future.”
Jim Loescher, Consultant on behalf of Boarsbarrow Farms Ltd
Boarsbarrow Farms Ltd
Boarsbarrow Farms Ltd is an enterprise made up of 3 farms across Dorset. They currently farm 350 acres on one farm in Beaminster, with 160 cross-bred cows. They are moving from a high-yield system to a grass-based, high-welfare farm. Their cows yield 8,000 litres, milking twice daily through a 16/32 herringbone and Autumn block calve.
The Situation
Boarsbarrow Farms Ltd had recently changed from a contract farming set up, to looking for employed staff members. They came to REAL Success Ltd looking to utilise our consultants’ experience and knowledge of recruitment in the dairy sector for employed staff.
The Task
Steph set up a Zoom call with Jim Loescher to build an understanding of the farm, their staff requirement and what the future looks like for Boarsbarrow. Jim shared the vision for Northfield Farm, where the recruitment need was. Steph shared her insights into the current staff market, specifically regarding Dorset as a location for potential candidates. Jim explained that the farm needed a Herd Manager, with extensive experience and the ability to work on their own initiative. Steph was able to build an understanding of the values and requirements that Boarsbarrow Farms required to go on and accomplish a successful placement.
Action
- Job description and advert created for the role, which was then posted on Indeed, the REAL Success Website, and other outlets.
- A unique Social Media project was created by our Marketing team and distributed across different platforms and groups.
- The recruitment team screened, phoned, and reference-checked all applicants. Steph also proactively contacted different candidates she knew and contacts who could help spread the word.
- Relevant candidates on our database were contacted regarding the position.
- Candidates’ shortlist was sent to Jim for review.
- These candidates were then sent Vita profiles, which helps us understand how they like to work and be managed.
- Certain candidates were then invited to the farm for an on-farm interview, organised by the recruitment team.
- After different interviews, a candidate was offered the role as Herd Manager. A detailed job offer letter was created and signed by the candidate, allowing them to hand in their notice with their current employer.
- The recruitment team then completed the full onboarding process, completing a driving license check, qualifications check, Right to Work check and forwarded on the Contract of Employment.
- Steph and Jim communicated regularly, with Steph updating them on the current candidate market, changes that needed to be made, and overall advice.
The Result
- A brilliant candidate was hired to manage the farm in January 2025.
We understand the pains of a growing business. Let us help you find the right staff.
