Men’s Health Week – Why it’s important for everyone

Every year, Men’s Health Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the physical and mental health challenges facing men across the UK. However, while the focus is on men’s health, the message is one that applies to everyone. Whether you’re a farmer, business owner, family member, or part of the wider agricultural community, taking care of your health should never be viewed as a luxury, it’s a necessity.

The farming industry is built on resilience. Farmers are known for their ability to overcome challenges, adapt to difficult circumstances, and keep going when times are tough. But the reality is that carrying the weight of those challenges alone can come at a significant cost.

The statistics surrounding men’s mental health are alarming:

  • More men under 50 in the UK die by suicide than from any other cause.
  • Fourteen men die by suicide every day in the UK.
  • Three out of every four suicides are male.
  • Male farm workers in the UK are approximately three times more likely to die by suicide than the male national average.

These figures highlight a serious issue that cannot be ignored.

Why Farming Can Be Particularly Challenging?

Farming is more than just a job; it’s a way of life. Many farmers live where they work, making it difficult to switch off at the end of the day. Long hours, financial pressures, unpredictable weather, changing regulations, labour shortages, disease outbreaks, and market uncertainty can all contribute to stress and anxiety.

For many people working in agriculture, there can also be a sense that they need to “just get on with it.” Asking for help is sometimes viewed as a sign of weakness when, in reality, it is one of the strongest things anyone can do.

Isolation can also play a significant role. While many people work alongside family members or small teams, farming can still be a lonely profession. Days spent working alone can mean worries build up without an opportunity to talk them through.

Health Is About More Than Mental Health

While mental health is a key focus during Men’s Health Week, overall wellbeing involves much more than our mental state.

Physical health, sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships, and work-life balance all play an important role in how we feel and perform. Looking after one area often has a positive impact on others.

Below are some simple actions that could make a significant difference:

Make Time for Conversations

Talking to someone you trust about how you’re feeling can help relieve pressure before problems become overwhelming. Whether it’s a family member, friend, colleague, neighbour, or professional, sharing concerns is often the first step towards finding solutions.

Prioritise Sleep

  • Sleep is often one of the first things sacrificed during busy periods in agriculture. However, poor sleep can affect concentration, decision-making, mood, and physical health. Creating a routine and allowing time to rest can have a major impact on wellbeing.

Stay Physically Active

  • Although farming can be physically demanding, targeted exercise such as walking, stretching, cycling, or strength training can help improve both physical and mental health.

Look After Your Diet

  • When workloads increase, it can be tempting to rely on convenience foods and caffeine. Eating regular, balanced meals and staying hydrated can help maintain energy levels and improve overall health.

Take Breaks

  • Stepping away from work, even for a short period, allows the mind to reset. A brief break can improve productivity and reduce stress levels.

Keep Connected

  • Community is one of agriculture’s greatest strengths. Checking in with co-workers, attending local events, or simply making time for a conversation can reduce feelings of isolation and strengthen support networks.

Looking After Your Team

Employers, managers, and business owners all have an important role to play in creating supportive workplaces.

Encouraging open conversations, recognising signs of stress, providing support when needed, and fostering a positive working environment can make a significant difference to the wellbeing of a team.

At REAL Success, we believe that people are the most important asset in any farming business. Investing in people development, understanding individual needs, and creating strong workplace cultures can help businesses thrive while supporting the wellbeing of those who make success possible.

A Message for Everyone

Although Men’s Health Week shines a spotlight on men’s health, the underlying message is universal. We all have physical and mental health, and we all need support from time to time.

Looking after yourself is not selfish. Taking time to rest, talk, seek support, and prioritise your wellbeing enables you to be at your best for your family, your colleagues, your business, and your future.

This Men’s Health Week, take a moment to check in with yourself and those around you. A simple conversation could make a bigger difference than you realise.
