Job description

Herd Manager – Launceston, Cornwall

NOTE – You will be working directly for the farm, not through REAL Success.

An exciting opportunity has arisen as we are looking for a Herd Manager to join one of our grass based dairy farms in Launceston, Cornwall.

Our Business & Farm

The business was founded in 1950 and since then the business has grown and diversified. Today we are currently organic farming across four locations in South Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

This role is working on one of our organic dairy units in Cornwall. The herd consists of 550 autumn block calving cows who are milked twice a day through a 24/48 herringbone parlour, averaging 5,500 litres. Our high quality milk is supplied to Arla, with all our records and data kept up to date using Herdwatch.

You will be joining a passionate team of 6 and we work hard to provide support and training at every level in our businesses, providing unique opportunities for everyone.

Your role

As a Herd Manager, you will be managing all day-to-day duties, reporting to the Farms Manager who is based in Devon. AI & Foot trimming experience is required, other roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Overall management of the herd and ensuring animal welfare is the top priority.
  • Leading and managing the team effectively.
  • Milking to a high standard as part of a team and ensuring the parlour is kept clean and safe to operate.
  • Working closely with the farms manager to achieve agreed KPI’s, financial budgets and herd targets.
  • Making the best quality forage and working with the Farms Manager to agree cropping.
  • Keeping basic records and compliance up to date.
  • Liaising with Vets, nutritionists and consultants for the farm.
  • Overall grazing management & budgeting
  • Taking full responsibility for dry cow management, calving cows and colostrum protocols.
  • General stockperson work and machine maintenance
  • Overseeing calf rearing and working with our neighbouring contract rearers to achieve excellent down calving heifers when they join the herd.

A full UK driving license and proof of UK right to work is required for this role.

The right person must demonstrate excellent agricultural and dairy management experience. We have invested in our business to ensure animal welfare is at the highest standard, milk quality is optimised and created an efficient farming business. You will be a confident individual who has a high attention to detail and strong communication skills.  You will also be someone who is honest, trustworthy and above all shares our passion for cows and dairy. This is an opportunity for you to take on responsibility and support us in moving the farm forward.

The Benefits

We will provide a competitive salary based on your experience and a commitment to your ongoing development. We can also offer a 5-bedroom house to meet your needs.

This is an important role in our business, so if we feel this role is going in the right direction, we would be open to discussing opportunities regarding a profit share scheme.

Our farm is based in a village close to the picturesque town of Launceston, Cornwall. With schools, pubs, leisure and transport routes nearby.

If you are ready to join our team as a Herd Manager, we would love to hear from you.
