Job description

Assistant Herdsperson – Iron Acton, Bristol, Gloucestershire

We are looking for an Assistant Herdsperson to join our existing team in Bristol, Gloucestershire. This is a new role due to the further expansion on multiple sites.

Our Farm

We have a long history of high-performance dairy farming including winning the RABDF Gold Cup in 2010 and the 2021 Cream Award for Health and Welfare. We milk 750 high production cows, 3 x day averaging over 13,600 litres through a 32/32 rapid exit parlour and achieve exceptional cow performance through an unwavering focus on cow health, welfare, and production.

To support effective cow management, we readily adopt technologies including CowConnect, activity collars for rumination, fertility, and health monitoring and both automated locomotion and body condition scoring, auto footbath, a contractor-spec fully automatic and hydraulic foot crate, and robotic feed pushes.

Our cows are all year-round calving and we put significant emphasis on both cow transition and calf management; our purpose-built unit is designed to ensure this is not a limiting factor in the business. We undertake all dairy youngstock and heifer rearing in-house, on a separate site.

Your Role

We are looking for an Assistant Herdsperson to work under the guidance of the Herdsperson with supporting the day-to-day cow responsibility of the Transition shed and calving element of the business, with responsibilities including:

– Working with the Youngstock unit lead to ensure a successful handover of calves.

– Calf management, including, tagging, weighing and feeding.

– Record Keeping & Performance Reports

– Milking to a high standard (190 head, mid-morning milking)

– Record and report on trials being carried out on transition and fresh cows.

– Keep the farm tidy and safe to operate, adhering to health and safety protocols.

– Ensuring cow health and welfare is the top priority.

– Machine driving and operating.

There is also an opportunity to be involved in the wider estate community. A Full UK Driving license is required for this role, an AI qualification is preferred but not essential. A proof of UK right to work will also need to be provided.

You will be working directly for the farm, not through REAL Success.

We’re looking for people with a can-do, positive attitude who are willing to work as part of a team to deliver high-quality results. You’ll have some experience in dairy and youngstock and be passionate about cows and have a keen eye for livestock. We want people we can invest in; we offer significant training and support for those who adopt an attitude of continuous improvement so you will make significant leaps in both your personal and professional development.

Great communication skills are required as you will be working as part of a team throughout the day, and we encourage you to bring forward ideas and challenge ways of working to improve the welfare outcomes, performance and profitability of the herd.

The Benefits

We operate an alternate weekend rota, 1 in 4 for night checks emergency cover. We have various service accommodation options available to suit the needs of the individual, the accommodation is offsite, located in Chipping Sodbury.

We offer 28 days holiday allowance and pension contributions and offer a competitive salary depending on experience.

Our farm is based near Bristol. With excellent schools. Leisure and shops nearby.

If you think you can help us as a Assistant Herdsperson, we’d like to hear from you.
